What this is
This guide walks you through the process of building an account-based marketing (ABM) audience in Propensity, from defining your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) to selecting accounts, creating a Buying Circle, and preparing for campaign activation.
In Propensity, ABM targeting is built around two main components:
- Audience: Defines which companies you want to target.
- Buying Circle: Defines which contacts within those companies you want to reach.
You can build audiences using company characteristics, intent signals, website activity, technology evidence, hiring information, and other targeting criteria. You can also import existing account or contact lists instead of building an audience from scratch.
When to use this
Use this guide when you want to:
- Create your first ABM audience in Propensity.
- Build an account list using your ideal customer profile.
- Refine your targeting using intent signals and other company-level criteria.
- Import existing accounts or contacts from your CRM or a CSV file.
- Create Buying Circles to identify relevant contacts within your target accounts.
- Prepare your audience for campaign activation.
If you already have a defined list of target companies, you can skip the ICP Builder and start by importing or configuring your audience.
Step 1: Define your Ideal Customer Profile (optional)
If you are unsure which companies to target, start with the ICP Builder.
The ICP Builder helps identify shared characteristics among companies that resemble your ideal customers.
You can enter up to 20 company website URLs and analyze patterns such as:
- Industries
- Company size
- Revenue ranges
- Locations
Use these insights to identify the company characteristics that should guide your audience targeting.
The ICP Builder does not automatically create an audience. Instead, it provides suggested attributes that you can use when building an audience.
If you already know your target market, proceed directly to the next step.
Step 2: Choose how to source your audience
Go to My Audiences and select New Audience.
The available audience creation methods are organized into three groups. Choose the option that best matches where your accounts or contacts come from.
Build from Accounts
Use these options when you want to start with companies rather than individual contacts.
Build an Audience
Create a new account audience using filters or AI.
Select Build an Audience, then choose one of the following options:
Standard
Build your audience manually by selecting company characteristics, intent signals, lifecycle stages, technologies, hiring activity, and other targeting criteria.
Choose this option when you already know which filters you want to apply.
AI-driven
Describe the types of companies you want to target in your own words. Propensity AI uses your description to generate audience criteria, which you can then review and edit.
You can refine the generated filters and adjust the targeting logic in Simple or Advanced mode before saving your audience.
Choose this option when you want AI to help you build an audience instead of configuring every filter manually.
Import Accounts from CRM
Import an existing account list from a connected CRM, such as Salesforce or HubSpot.
Use this option when your organization already maintains a defined list of target accounts in its CRM.
Upload an Account List
Upload a CSV file containing the accounts you want to target.
You can also add intent signals to refine your uploaded audience.
For detailed instructions, see How to Upload an Account List.
Build from Contacts
Use these options when your starting point is a group of people rather than companies.
Import Contacts from CRM
Import contacts from a connected CRM. Propensity matches the imported contacts against its database.
Upload Contact List
Upload a CSV file containing the contacts you want to target.
Propensity matches the uploaded contacts against its database to create an audience.
For instructions, see How to Upload a Contact List.
Persona-Based Audience
Use a Persona to describe the types of contacts you want to reach, such as particular job titles, departments, or roles.
Propensity identifies matching contacts and the accounts associated with them.
For more information, see Using the Persona Finder in Propensity.
Retarget Contacts
Create an audience using existing engagement or contact activity.
Available options include:
- Contact Activity Retargeting: Build a fixed list of contacts using recorded impressions, clicks, and website visits.
- Contact Warmth Retargeting: Target contacts based on their current warmth classification.
- Contact Website Visitor Retargeting: Target contacts who have recently interacted with your website.
- Account Website Visitor Retargeting: Target accounts that have recently visited your website.
For more information about warmth, see Propensity Contact Warmth.
Additional Options
These tools help you combine existing audiences or discover additional accounts.
Merge Audiences
Combine multiple account audiences into one audience. Connected Buying Circles are also merged.
For instructions, see Merging Audiences.
Explore ICP Builder
Explore intent signals associated with companies that fit your ICP and use the findings to discover additional target accounts.
Step 3: Build and refine a Standard Audience
If you selected an Standard Audience, Propensity opens the New audience screen.
This screen is divided into two main areas:
- Filters: The panel on the left where you define your targeting criteria.
- Account preview: The panel on the right where you can review a sample of matching accounts.
The Filters panel is organized into seven categories. Expand a category to view its available filters.
You can also use Find a filter to locate a specific criterion, Clear all to clear your selected filters, or Hide filters to collapse the panel.
You do not need to use every category. Start with your primary targeting requirements and add additional filters as needed.
Company profile
Company profile contains the primary firmographic filters used to define your target market.
Company Revenue Ranges
Select the annual revenue ranges you want to include.
You can select multiple ranges to target companies at different revenue levels.
Company Size
Select the employee-count ranges that match your ideal customer profile.
This helps you focus on small businesses, mid-market companies, enterprise organizations, or a combination of company sizes.
Industries You Want to Target
Select the industries relevant to your products or services.
You can include multiple industries when your target market spans different sectors.
Locations of Your Target Customers
Select the geographic locations where you want to target companies.
Use this filter to narrow your audience to specific markets or regions.
For example, you could combine industry, employee-count range, and location to create an initial audience of companies that fit your ICP.
Account stages
Account stages lets you target companies based on their lifecycle stage and confirmed contact participation.
Lifecycle stages describe an account's progression through your marketing and sales process.
The available stages include:
- Target
- Aware
- Engaged
- Marketing Qualified
- Sales Accepted
- Opportunity
- Customer
Use this category when you want to focus your audience on companies at a particular point in their lifecycle.
Add condition
Click Add condition to create a lifecycle rule.
The following options appear:
- Scope: Choose whether the condition applies to the Overall account, Any initiative, or A specific initiative. If you select A specific initiative, an additional field appears so you can choose the initiative.
- Stage: Select the lifecycle stage you want to target, such as Engaged, Opportunity, or Customer. You can also leave this as No stage condition.
- Has confirmed contact participation: Check this option to include confirmed contact participation in your criteria. Additional fields appear, allowing you to search for and select relevant contacts or participation roles.
You can use a single condition or combine multiple conditions to create more specific targeting rules.
Combine conditions
Use the buttons below your condition to create more specific targeting rules:
- AND group: Add another condition that must also be met.
- OR group: Add another condition where at least one of the conditions must be met.
- NOT: Exclude accounts that match a condition.
- Remove condition: Delete the selected condition.
For example, you could use an AND group to target accounts that are at least Engaged and have confirmed contact participation.
When working with a group, you can add more conditions and choose how they should be combined.
Manage account stage filters
The Account stages section includes the following controls:
- Add condition: Create a new lifecycle condition.
- Clear lifecycle criteria: Remove the configured lifecycle filters.
- Reload saved lifecycle criteria: Restore the previously saved lifecycle criteria when editing an existing audience.
If no conditions are configured, the section displays No lifecycle filter.
After changing your lifecycle criteria, click Update preview to refresh the matching account sample. The message asking you to refresh the preview simply indicates that your criteria have changed
Keyword vectors
Keyword vectors helps you identify companies based on words or phrases found in captured website content.
This filter is useful when you want to target companies that discuss particular technologies, services, products, or business activities on their websites.
Keywords or phrases
Enter the keywords or phrases you want to match, one per line.
For example:
- Manufacturing automation
- Industrial robotics
- Supply chain optimization
Propensity searches captured website text for these terms, including close spelling variations.
Terms containing fewer than four characters require an exact match.
Match
Choose how the entered terms should be evaluated:
- All keywords: Require all entered terms to match.
- Any keyword: Match at least one entered term.
For example, if your target market includes companies working with industrial automation, you could enter several related phrases and choose Any keyword to include companies using different terminology.
Important: Keyword vectors searches website content, not buying intent. A company mentioning a phrase on its website does not necessarily indicate that it is actively researching a purchase.
Keyword vectors is also different from Company keywords (legacy), which is available under Advanced filters.
Technographics
Technographics lets you target companies using technology-related evidence.
The section includes two types of technology signals.
Company technology signals - employee-derived
Search for technologies associated with employee-reported experience and skills.
These signals can indicate that people associated with a company have experience with particular technologies.
However, employee-derived evidence does not necessarily confirm that a technology is currently installed or used by the company.
Minimum evidence strength
Choose how strong the available technology evidence must be for a company to match your filter.
- Any supported evidence: Include any supported level of evidence.
- Moderate or strong: Require at least moderate evidence.
- Strong: Require strong evidence.
Match company technology signals
Choose how multiple selected technologies should be evaluated:
- Any selected technology: Match at least one selected technology.
- All selected technologies: Require all selected technologies to match.
Website technologies - observed
Use this filter to target companies based on technologies observed through publicly available website evidence.
Select Check website technology catalog to access the published website technology catalog, then search for and select the technologies you want.
Website technology evidence can include public website assets and generator markers. It is separate from employee-derived signals and does not necessarily establish every technology used internally by the company.
Match website technologies
Choose whether accounts must match:
- Any selected technology
- All selected technologies
Combining technology groups
When you configure both employee-derived and observed website technology criteria, accounts must satisfy the requirements of both groups.
Missing evidence is treated as unknown rather than automatically confirming that a company does not use a technology.
For example, you could use Technographics to find companies with employee experience in a particular software platform and observable evidence of another technology on their websites.
Intent & activity
Intent & activity lets you refine your audience using intent topics, competitor-related signals, and website activity.
Use this category when you want to include companies showing relevant research or engagement signals.
Select Intent Signals
Intent signals help identify accounts associated with research topics relevant to your market.
Within this section, you can:
- Search for intent topics: Find specific topics relevant to your products or services.
- All Themes: Browse topics by their available themes.
- More topics: Load additional topics beyond those initially displayed.
- View List: Open the intent topics list.
- Intent Groups: Access available groups of intent topics.
- Import Signals: Access the option to import intent signals.
Select the + icon next to a topic to add it to your targeting criteria.
Intent signal matching
Choose how selected intent signals should be evaluated:
- Match Any Signal: Match accounts associated with at least one selected signal.
- Match All Signals: Require all selected signals to match.
For example, a company offering cybersecurity solutions might select topics related to network security, identity management, and threat detection.
Competitors to Track
Use this area to select competitors relevant to your market.
You can search for competitors, add them to your selection, or use View List to access the competitor list.
The Find Recommended Competitors option is also available when the necessary criteria are met.
Selected competitors are used as competitive signals in your results.
Website Visitors
Use this filter to apply website visitor criteria to your audience.
Select the appropriate option from the dropdown to determine how website visitation should affect the accounts included.
This is useful when you want to incorporate existing website engagement into your targeting.
Page Visited
Use this field to target accounts based on page-related website activity.
You can enter page paths, URLs, keywords, or UTM-related terms.
For example:
/pricingpricingutm=pricing
This can help identify accounts associated with activity on pages relevant to particular products, services, or campaigns.
Job postings
Job postings lets you target companies based on captured job posting information.
Hiring activity can provide insight into a company's areas of investment, operational priorities, or potential business needs.
Job titles
Enter the job titles you want to match, one per line.
For example:
- Cloud Engineer
- Data Analyst
- Security Architect
Title matching
Choose how job titles should be evaluated:
- Similar title: Match titles with similar wording.
- Contains text: Look for the entered text within job titles.
Department
Select the department associated with the job posting.
Role
Select a more specific role classification.
Seniority
Choose the seniority level relevant to the positions you want to target.
Job location
Enter a geographic location associated with the position.
For example, you could look for companies hiring software engineers in Boston.
Posting keywords
Enter keywords or phrases associated with the job posting, one per line.
For example:
- Cloud infrastructure
- Machine learning
- Cybersecurity
Last observed on or after
Choose a date to include postings observed on or after that date.
This refers to when the posting was last observed in the available data, not necessarily when it was first published.
Match within one posting
Choose how the selected job posting criteria should be evaluated:
- All conditions: Require all conditions to match within the same posting.
- Any condition: Require at least one condition to match.
For example, you could look for companies with a recently observed job posting that matches a cloud engineering role in a particular location.
Note: Job postings are based on captured data. A posting included in the results may no longer be open.
Advanced filters
Advanced filters contains additional criteria for refining your audience using company attributes, scoring, inclusion and exclusion rules, and funding information.
Company keywords (legacy)
Use stored company keyword lists and website addresses with the existing legacy matching rules.
This filter is different from Keyword vectors, which searches captured website text.
Existing audiences retain their legacy keyword criteria.
For website-content targeting, use Keyword vectors.
Minimum Propensity Score
Enter the minimum Propensity Score an account must meet.
Use this when you want to restrict the audience to accounts above a particular scoring threshold.
Maximum Propensity Score
Enter the maximum Propensity Score for the accounts in your audience.
You can combine minimum and maximum values to define a scoring range.
These thresholds are applied when the audience is saved, so they may not be fully reflected in the candidate preview.
Employee Growth Rate
Select the employee growth rate ranges relevant to your targeting.
This can help identify companies showing particular workforce growth patterns.
Company keyword exclusions (legacy)
Exclude matches from stored company keyword lists using legacy rules.
These exclusions do not apply to the captured website text searched by Keyword vectors.
Additional Industries
Enter additional industries you want to include in your targeting criteria.
Industries to Exclude
Select industries that should not be included in your audience.
For example, you might target a broad market while excluding specific industry segments that are not relevant to your offering.
Websites To Target
Enter the websites of specific companies you want to include in your targeting.
This is particularly useful for smaller, account-specific campaigns.
Websites To Exclude
Enter the websites of companies you do not want included in the audience.
Use Add to add an exclusion or Add multiple websites to enter several websites.
You can also use Clear exclusions to remove the configured exclusions.
Website exclusions can apply to uploaded lists and audience refreshes. Enter subdomains separately when you need to exclude them.
For example, you could exclude competitors, existing customers, or accounts that should not be part of a particular campaign.
Funding Minimum
Enter the minimum funding amount for companies you want to include.
Funding Maximum
Enter the maximum funding amount.
You can use these fields together to target companies within a particular funding range.
Last Funding Date
Choose a date to include companies funded from that date through the present.
This can help focus your targeting on companies with more recent funding activity.
Founding Date
Choose a date to include companies founded from that date through the present.
Use this filter when company age is relevant to your target market.
Step 4: Configure the refresh schedule and preview your audience
After selecting your filters, review your criteria and decide how your audience should be refreshed.
Review selected filters
Above the Account preview, expand Selected filters to review the criteria currently applied to your audience.
Use this section to confirm that your targeting is configured as intended.
You can return to the Filters panel to adjust or remove criteria.
Configure Audience Refresh Schedule
At the bottom of the Filters panel, locate Audience Refresh Schedule.
Choose how you want Propensity to update your audience.
Available scheduling options include:
- Manual Refresh Only: Use manual refresh actions rather than a recurring refresh schedule.
- Automated Daily refresh: Refresh the audience automatically each day.
- Automated Weekly refresh: Refresh the audience automatically each week.
Choose a schedule based on how frequently you want the audience to be updated.
Preview matching accounts
The Account preview panel displays a sample of accounts matching your current targeting criteria.
To preview your audience:
- Select the filters you want to apply
- Click Update preview at the bottom of the Filters panel
- Review the returned account sample
- Adjust your filters if necessary
- Click Update preview again to refresh the sample
When you change your criteria, Propensity displays a message indicating that the preview needs to be refreshed.
The preview is not necessarily the final saved audience. It shows matching candidates before final scoring, capacity limits, and other processing steps are completed.
Previewing is optional. You can save an audience without generating a preview first.
Step 5: Save and review your audience
Once you have configured your targeting criteria:
- Review your selected filters and refresh schedule
- Select Save Audience in the upper-right corner
- Complete any additional required prompts
- Save your audience
Propensity processes the audience according to the selected criteria.
Return to My Audiences to review your saved audiences.
Depending on the audience and its processing state, the list can display:
- Account counts
- Connected Buying Circles
- Processing statuses, such as Processing and Complete
Review your account list
Once processing is complete, review the accounts included in your audience.
Check that:
- The accounts align with your ideal customer profile
- The audience contains an appropriate number of accounts for your campaign goals
- Irrelevant or unwanted companies have been excluded
- Your selected intent signals and other targeting criteria support your intended audience
If necessary, return to the audience and refine its criteria.
This review helps ensure your audience is ready before you begin defining the contacts you want to reach.
Step 6: Create a Buying Circle
Once you have created your account audience, you can define a Buying Circle.
A Buying Circle identifies the contacts you want to target within the companies in your audience.
Navigate to the Buying Circle area and create a Buying Circle associated with your target audience.
For more information, see How to Build a Buying Circle with Propensity.
Step 7: Connect your website (optional)
You can connect your website using ABM Connected Website.
Connecting your website enables Propensity to collect website visitor activity that can support account targeting and engagement analysis.
Website activity can provide additional context about which accounts are interacting with your business.
For setup instructions, see How to Set Up the ABM Connected Website.
Connecting your website is optional for creating an audience, but it is relevant when your targeting strategy depends on website visitor data.
Step 8: Prepare for campaign activation
After building your audience, review your targeting setup before creating and launching plays.
Confirm that:
- Your audience has been created and processed
- The account list aligns with your campaign goals
- Your Buying Circle includes the contacts you want to reach
- Your refresh schedule is appropriate for your targeting strategy
- Your website is connected if your campaign depends on website activity
Once these elements are ready, you can proceed to create and configure your plays in Propensity.
Important notes
- Keyword filters work differently: Keyword vectors searches captured website content, while Company keywords (legacy) uses older matching rules. Legacy keyword exclusions do not apply to Keyword vectors
- Account preview is optional: You can save an audience without previewing it. Preview results may differ from the final account list after processing
- Preview and audience refreshes are separate: Update preview refreshes the sample shown in the editor, while Audience Refresh Schedule controls when the saved audience is refreshed
