What it is
TikTok Contextual Campaigns allow you to create a TikTok Contextual Video Ad that targets users based on hashtag interaction.
Instead of targeting a predefined audience, this campaign targets users who have interacted with TikTok content containing selected hashtags within the last 7 days.
You define the contextual targeting by searching and selecting relevant hashtags during campaign setup.
How it works
TikTok Contextual Campaign uses hashtag-based targeting.
When configuring the campaign:
You search for hashtags using keyword terms
The platform returns related hashtags
You select one or more hashtags
The campaign targets users who have interacted with TikTok content containing those hashtags within the past 7 days
Requirements
To create and launch a TikTok Contextual Campaign:
The campaign must be created as a Contextual Campaign
At least one hashtag must be selected
Required TikTok assets must be uploaded:
Video
Thumbnail
A TikTok connection must be active
If any required element is missing, the campaign will not be launch-ready.
How to create a TikTok Contextual Campaign
Create a new campaign and select Contextual Campaign
Configure campaign dates and basic settings
Select TikTok Contextual Video Ad as your contextual campaign
In the Playbook, select TikTok Contextual Video Ad and View the play set up
Click Edit and configure your ad settings (Call to action, ad text, etc.)
In the Hashtag Targeting section:
Enter search terms
Review returned hashtags
Select one or more hashtags
Upload your required assets:
Video
Thumbnail
Save your changes and review the Set Up requirements
Go to Launch, confirm budget and launch the campaign
The launch flow follows the same steps as a standard TikTok campaign.
What to expect
TikTok Contextual Campaigns use contextual, behavior-based targeting rather than predefined audiences.
Because targeting is based on recent hashtag interaction:
- A static audience list is not generated
- Audience size is not be visible
- Delivery depends on user interaction with selected hashtags within the last 7 days
Common errors
No hashtags selected
If no hashtags are selected, the campaign will not be launch-ready.
Hashtag search returns no results
If your search term does not return any hashtags, try using broader or alternative keywords.
Missing required assets
Both a video and thumbnail are required before launch.
